Skills Required When Advising Clients — CII R01 questions & revision

Fact-finding, communication and client relationships.

The human side of advice. Smaller in the bank but examinable: how to gather information well, communicate clearly, and build a relationship a client can trust. Questions are scenario-led — you are given an interaction and asked what a good adviser does next.

What client skills covers in the R01 exam

  • Structured fact-finding and drawing out real objectives
  • Questioning and active listening
  • Explaining complex products in plain language
  • Adapting to the client's knowledge, experience and vulnerability
  • Managing expectations and building long-term trust
  • Recording and confirming what was discussed and agreed

Where candidates lose marks

Leading the client toward a product instead of establishing their needs first.

Using jargon that a retail client cannot reasonably be expected to understand.

Treating the fact-find as paperwork rather than the basis of suitability.

Client skills — questions answered

Why is fact-finding important in financial advice?

The fact-find establishes the client's circumstances, objectives, knowledge and risk profile — the basis for any suitable recommendation. Leading a client toward a product before establishing their needs undermines suitability and breaches the advice rules.

How should an adviser communicate with a vulnerable client?

Adapt communication to the client's needs, check their understanding, and take extra care that they can make an informed decision. Consumer Duty and the FCA's vulnerability guidance require fair treatment tailored to the individual.
