Noise & Welfare questions for the CSCS test

Noise and vibration cause permanent, untreatable damage, and every site must provide basic welfare. The test checks that you protect your hearing, understand hand-arm vibration, and know what facilities you are entitled to.

What noise and welfare covers in the HS&E test

  • Noise damage is permanent — hearing protection where signed or where you must raise your voice to be heard
  • Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) from vibrating tools, and limiting trigger time
  • Reporting early symptoms of HAVS such as tingling or white fingers
  • Welfare facilities a site must provide: toilets, washing, drinking water, a place to eat and change
  • Keeping welfare facilities clean and usable

Where people lose marks

Assuming hearing damage recovers. It does not — protection is used before the damage is done.

Ignoring tingling or numbness in the fingers rather than reporting it early.

Thinking welfare is optional. Adequate facilities are a legal requirement on every site.
