Working At Height questions for the CSCS test

Ladders, scaffolds, MEWPs, edge protection and falling objects.

Available on iOS and Android

Falls from height are the biggest single cause of death in construction, so this is one of the largest areas on the test. Questions are practical: which access equipment suits which job, what makes a ladder or scaffold safe to use, and how to stop tools and materials falling onto people below.

What working at height covers in the HS&E test

  • Choosing the right access equipment — ladder, tower, scaffold or MEWP — for the task
  • Pre-use checks on ladders and stepladders, and the three-points-of-contact rule
  • Scaffold safety: guard rails, toe boards, the scaffold tag and never altering a scaffold yourself
  • Mobile tower stability, outriggers and never moving a tower with someone on it
  • Edge protection, holes and openings, and covering or guarding them
  • Preventing falling objects: toe boards, brick guards, nets and exclusion zones
  • When a harness is needed, and that it must be clipped to a suitable anchor

Where people lose marks

Treating a ladder as a work platform for a long job. A ladder is for short-duration, light work and access only.

Assuming any scaffold with boards is safe to climb. If the tag is missing, incomplete or red, you do not use it.

Believing a harness makes you safe on its own — it only works when it is clipped to a proper anchor point.
