CSCS questions, answered
The green card is the CSCS Labourer card. It shows you have the basic health-and-safety knowledge to work on a UK construction site in a labouring or general role. To get one you need a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (or an approved equivalent) and a current pass in the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test for Operatives.
The Operatives test is 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, sat at a Pearson VUE test centre. You need 45 correct to pass. It is made up of 38 knowledge questions and 12 behavioural case-study questions built around short site scenarios.
You need 45 out of 50 to pass the CITB HS&E Operatives test. Because the pass mark is high, the behavioural case-study questions — which reward the safest, most responsible answer — are where many people lose the marks that matter.
People use the names interchangeably, but they are two things. The CITB HS&E test is the health-and-safety exam. CSCS is the card scheme. You pass the CITB test, then apply to CSCS for the card. For a green Labourer card you sit the Operatives version of the test.
Yes. As well as passing the HS&E test you need the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or an approved equivalent — usually a short one-day course. Your training provider can confirm what qualifies before you apply.
The CSCS Labourer card is valid for five years. To renew it you sit the HS&E test again before it expires.

The green Labourer card lets you work on site in a general role. From there, gaining a recognised construction qualification (an NVQ or equivalent) lets you move up to a skilled-worker card in your trade, such as the blue Skilled Worker card.
